Happy Juneteenth! As we continue to weather and fight against the storms that are COVID-19 and the Black Lives Matter movement, today I wanted to highlight 10 black-owned beauty brands that are worth trying out!
In this time more than ever, we need to support black people and their efforts against overturning hundreds of years of racial injustice and violence. Not only can we do this by signing petitions, donating, and participating in peaceful protests, we can also support black-owned businesses. Today I wanted to place the spotlight on 10 black-owned beauty brands that you can support!
BEAUTY BAKERIE https://www.beautybakerie.com/
Beauty Bakerie is a cruelty-free makeup brand founded by Cashmere Nicole. Her dream to be an entrepreneur started when she was just nine years old, and as she progressed through life, Nicole started Beauty Bakerie. The makeup brand focuses on all skin tones, is made to be smudge-proof, and is also paraben-free and vegan.
JUVIA’S PLACE https://www.juviasplace.com/
Chichi Eburu is the founder of Juvia’s Place, a makeup brand with richly pigmented eyeshadows and vibrant lip products inspired by African heritage. When it comes to base products, there are shades for every skin tone and the eyeshadow palettes are packed with a variety of hues.
BRIOGEO https://briogeohair.com/
Nancy Twine founded Briogeo when she realized natural hair care products that were already on the market didn’t work as well as they claimed to. She decided to create her own hair care brand that would cater to different hair types and would deliver results.
KNC BEAUTY https://kncbeauty.com/
Kristen Noel Crawley is the founder of KNC Beauty, a skincare brand focused on lip and eye products. Her most popular items are the shooting star-shaped eye masks and collagen-infused lip masks that have been all over Instagram.
MENTED COSMETICS https://www.mentedcosmetics.com/
The idea for Mented Cosmetics came after KJ Miller and Amanda Johnson were thinking about why it was so hard to buy a nude lipstick for their skin tone. From there, they decided to create pig”mented” makeup to take the guesswork out of finding the right shade for your skin color. Their lipsticks are vegan, cruelty-free, paraben-free, and nontoxic.
BLACK GIRL SUNSCREEN https://www.blackgirlsunscreen.com/
Black Girl Sunscreen was created in 2016 by Shontay Lundy when she noticed the lack of sunscreens for women of color. By creating her own brand, Lundy was able to enjoy her love of being outdoors and encourage other women to get outside while protecting their skin from the sun. It’s fragrance-free and won’t leave a white residue on the skin, making it great for deeper skin tones.
THE LIP BAR https://www.thelipbar.com/
The Lip Bar is a makeup brand that was launched in 2012 by Melissa Butler. She was tired of seeing a lack of diversity in the beauty industry so she worked to make her own version of beauty and started by making lipsticks in her kitchen. When she proposed her business idea on Shark Tank, the sharks turned her down. However, she kept working towards her dream and now The Lip Bar can be found in many Target locations as well as their first flagship store in downtown Detroit. Their makeup is also vegan and cruelty free.
BASE BUTTER https://www.basebutter.com/
Base Butter is a skincare brand founded by She’Neil Johnson and Nicolette Graves. They wanted to make simple formulas that work well for oily and combination skin types. Their most popular item is the Radiate Face Jelly, which is a moisturizer made of aloe vera gel.
CURLBOX https://curlbox.com/
Curlbox is a subscription service that delivers curly hair products to your door every month. Founded by Myleik Teele, she wanted to give other women the ability to take care of their natural hair by curating and sending products in a subscription box so that other women wouldn’t have to go through as much trial and error trying to find products that work for them. If you don’t want to sign up for their monthly service, the site also sells stand-alone products and special releases.
RANGE BEAUTY https://www.rangebeauty.com/
Alicia Scott is the founder of Range Beauty. Scott decided to create her own brand when she realized her makeup collection was lacking because she couldn’t find makeup that matched her skin tone and undertone. In addition, many products would make her acne and eczema flare up. Range Beauty focuses on making diverse shades while using less toxic ingredients. They’re cruelty-free and are made in the USA.
And that’s it for today’s post! I hope you’ll check out these brands and support them!
On a personal note: Lately, I’ve been finding that I not only feel physically exhausted, but mentally drained as well. Ever since the pandemic started and the Black Lives Matter movement gained attention and momentum, the news and every social media platform has been constantly feeding us information. Additionally, everyone seems to have something to say and I’ve come across many arguments on all kinds of topics on social media. As someone who tries to understand every perspective while staying updated with current events, I find that being online has worn me down.
These days, I try to spend more time away from the internet. I stand with black lives and I’ve supported the movement where I can, but I also want to take care of my mental health. I read a creator’s caption on Instagram recently and she said this: “I believe Black Lives Matter. But I know it’s not my role to lead or educate on anti-racism.” – jera.bean. I agree with this because I don’t believe that it’s my place to try and be a leader or educator on this topic. There are many people out there who know much more and have more important stories to tell, so I’d rather let them lead the way.
Anyways, I hope that my post was helpful. I also hope we all take breaks from being online to take care of our physical and mental health. I’ll still be posting content about fashion and beauty because my blog is my sanctuary when I want to escape from the world for a bit, so I hope it can help you as well. ?
