So I always hated tea and coffee growing up; the bitter taste was so unappealing to me. Nowadays, I actually enjoy drinking tea, even though the taste isn’t my favorite. Here are some of the amazing health benefits of green tea that motivates me to drink it!
First, what is green tea?
Green tea comes from the Camellia sinensis plant. Fun fact: green and black tea both come from the same plant; it’s how they’re processed that makes them different. Green tea is harvested and then dried very quickly through processes such as pan-firing or steaming so that they don’t get a chance to oxidize. Black tea is is allowed to oxidize before they are dried.
Green tea is said to have originated in China and was popularized in Japan later on. And nowadays, green tea is popular everywhere in the world, especially since there is research showing that this drink has so many health benefits.
The taste of green tea also depends on how it’s processed. I mentioned that there are two popular methods to creating green tea: pan-firing and steaming. Pan-firing green tea leaves is a popular Chinese method, while steaming is mostly a Japanese method. From there, this creates different types of Japanese and Chinese green teas, the most easily recognized names being matcha and sencha.
The average caffeine content is 24-40 mg of caffeine, which is considerably less than coffee, but enough to wake you up for the day or as a pick me up in the afternoon when you need a little more energy.

1. It’s a good substitute for coffee.
Don’t like coffee? Then try tea! It has less caffeine than coffee so it won’t make you as energized and awake, but it’ll give you a more natural energy boost and wake you up in the morning so it does have similar effects to coffee.
2. It helps with weight loss.
Green tea is proven to burn fat and boost your metabolism which can aid in weight loss. So add green tea into your regular diet and fitness routine and you might see increased results.
3. It improves your skin.
Green tea can apparently help with your skin because of the catechins in it. There are 5 different types of catechins; catechins are molecules that have a chemical structure which can stabilize free radicals.
Free radicals are known to come from pollution (smog and other forms of pollution) and have negative effects on your skin and body, so drinking green tea can fight against these radicals and keep your skin looking healthy.
4. Green tea can help with bad breath.
Because of those catechins, they have also been shown to kill bacteria and viruses, so it can help with your oral health and keep your breath fresher longer.
5. It can boost your immune system.
Since green tea has the ability to kill bacteria and viruses, it can also keep your immune system strong. Green tea will be able to stop viruses and infections in their tracks, consequently leading to a smaller chance of getting sick or contracting any diseases. I always drank more tea when I started feeling under the weather and I personally think it helped me from getting too sick.
6. It can lower the risk of getting certain cancers.
According to some studies, green tea can lower your risk of getting breast cancer, prostate cancer, and colorectal cancer by 22-57%. There is no solid research that green tea is directly linked to a reduced risk of cancer, but the amount of antioxidants in this tea is a good preventative measure against it.
7. It has more antioxidants than fruits and vegetables.
Who would’ve thought that a simple tea could be just as healthy or healthier than fruits and vegetables? Apparently green tea has 10 times the amount of polyphenols, another word for antioxidants, than your regular fruits and veggies.
