Ever wanted to learn more about the backstory behind designers and their collections? Today’s post will be highlighting designers from London Fashion Week!

JENNY PACKHAM

Jenny Packham is a British designer who is well-known for her bridal collections as well as her ready-to-wear collections.

Packham studied fashion at Southampton Solent University and graduated from St. Martin’s School of Art. She also received an honorary doctorate degree from Southampton Solent University.

Packham launched her own brand in 1988 designing wedding dresses and eveningwear. She has shown her collections in London, Milan, and New York, but currently does shows for London Fashion Week.

Many celebrities have worn her designs, most notably the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton. Other famous women that have worn her designs are Emily Blunt, Rihanna, Vanessa Hudgens, Miley Cyrus, Kate Winslet, Jennifer Aniston, Beyonce, Angelina Jolie, and many others.

The inspiration behind this collection was taken from Jean Harlow. Packham thinks of Harlow as feisty and sultry when it comes to the actress’s work. Packham also came back from a 17-season hiatus and this marked her company’s 30th-year anniversary, so this show was very important to her.

The prominent colors in the collection were navy blue, pink/coral, black, and white. There was lots of tulle, sparkles, and floral print that complimented the high-neck, halter-top, and V necklines. I personally loved every single piece; see the whole collection here.

MATTY BOVAN

Matty Bovan grew up in York and graduated from Central Saint Martins with an MA in fashion knitwear. His graduate collection caught many people’s eyes and allowed him to work with the likes of Marc Jacobs and Miu Miu. Stylist Katie Grand was also interested in Bovan and featured him in her magazine called LOVE. He is now a senior contributing fashion editor for the magazine and shows his collections at London Fashion Week.

Bovan’s most recent collection was extremely whimsical and was a mix of Brexit with a dash of witchcraft thrown into the cauldron of his designs. He mixed together a rainbow of color with different types of fabrics and silhouettes to create extremely intricate suits, suit dresses, and dresses.

HALPERN

Michael Halpern is an American designer currently based in London. He graduated from Parsons School of Design and was a design assistant for Oscar de la Renta and J. Mendel. After moving to London, Halpern received his masters at Central Saint Martins and showed his MA collection at London Fashion Week in 2016. This caught the attention of Donatella Versace, so he works for her along with his own label.

His main inspiration comes from his mother and her Studio 54 (a nightclub that has since been transformed into a theater) stories from the ’70s. He wants women to feel comfortable wearing sparkly and sequined clothes and to bring back sequins not just for nights out, but also for closet items such as skirts and polo shirts.

Halpern’s collection didn’t disappoint in the sparkle department as usual. With a myriad of colors ranging from a rich violet/purple to bright yellow to gold, red, and orange, the runway was lit up with his designs. There was a variety of draping, ruching, and necklines. He mainly created off-the-shoulder, halter-top, and one-shoulder looks. In addition to the colors, Halpern incorporated stripes and color-blocking into his pieces.
